Deciding between Star Realms Core Set and Rise of Empire? Compare the classic deckbuilder with the legacy campaign to find your perfect starting point.
Quick answer
Start with the Star Realms Core Set if you want a fast, affordable introduction to deck building. Choose Rise of Empire if you prefer a deep legacy campaign and have a regular group ready for 12 scenarios.
Core Set vs Rise of Empire: What's the real difference?
The Core Set is a pure deckbuilding game: you start with a small personal deck and buy more powerful cards to outmaneuver your opponent. Its low price and quick setup make it ideal for learning the mechanics or playing with strangers.
Rise of Empire, by contrast, is a standalone legacy game. It begins as a 2-player, 12-scenario campaign where your choices permanently alter the game board and cards. After the campaign, it becomes a fully customizable 2-6 player Star Realms set that remains compatible with other Star Realms products.
The trade-off is depth versus accessibility: the Core Set teaches you the fundamentals in minutes, while Rise of Empire rewards long-term commitment and a consistent group.
Price and value trade-off
The Core Set is one of the most budget-friendly deckbuilders available, making it a low-risk way to test the genre. Rise of Empire costs significantly more, but it includes a campaign, a folding game board, score dials, envelopes, sticker sheets, oversized cards, and more.
If you're unsure whether Star Realms will click with your group, the Core Set is the cheaper entry point. If you already know you love deckbuilding and want a rich, evolving experience, the higher price of Rise of Empire can be justified by its replayability and physical components.
Trade-off: Core Set vs Rise of Empire
- Start with the Core Set if: you want a quick, affordable way to learn Star Realms deckbuilding. It's perfect for trying the game with friends or solo before investing more. After a few games, you'll know if you enjoy the core loop enough to explore legacy content.
- Choose Rise of Empire if: you have a regular 2-player group ready for a 12-scenario campaign. The legacy mechanics add permanence and surprise that the Core Set lacks. Remember that after the campaign, it becomes a fully customizable 2-6 player set, so it can replace the Core Set for group play.
- Consider both if: you want the Core Set for quick matches and Rise of Empire for extended sessions. They are fully compatible, so you can mix them. Starting with the Core Set and later adding Rise of Empire gives you the best of both worlds without missing out.
